1981: In Spain, armed civil guards invade the Cortes (parliament) in an attempt to seize power. King Juan Carlos narrowly foils the coup by convincing most of the military units to remain loyal to the government.
1995: The Dow Jones industrial average tops 4,000 for the first time.
1997: Scottish researchers announce the first cloning of an adult animal--a sheep named Dolly.
