1848: A treaty is signed ending the U.S. war with Mexico; Mexico cedes claims to Texas, California, and other territory.
1936: The 5 charter members of the Baseball Hall of Fame are announced: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner.
1967: The American Basketball Association is formed.
1974: A new Cultural Revolution begins in China.
1998: For the first time in nearly 3 decades, the president submits a balanced federal budget.
2003: Czech President Vaclav Havel leaves office with no successor; Vaclav Klaus is elected to the office Feb. 28.
2005: President Bush delivers the annual State of the Union address, calling for Congress to act to reform the Social Security retirement system, which he warns will otherwise become insolvent.
